10 Things Your Business Can Learn From Star Wars

By Zaf Sedat

USING THE FORCE

Every year on the 4th of May, fans worldwide celebrate Star Wars Day, with the pun ‘May the fourth be with you’ coming from the successful catchphrase from the series.

You may have never considered it, but business and Star Wars are similar in many ways.

If you think about it, you can see the Rebel Alliance as a small business in a world where the larger corporations rule. The Empire has power and resources while the Alliance has to depend on other things. As we start a new business most of us have only ourselves to depend on and we don’t have a lot of resources or power.

Here are some of the things start-ups and companies can learn from the Star Wars universe.

Believe in yourself

Star Wars fans out there will remember when Luke Skywalker was in the murky swamp with Yoda and he struggled with accepting that he had the Force within him. As long as he didn’t truly believe in himself, he couldn’t succeed.

The same goes for you and your start-up. You have to believe you have the Force, the power to start a business and to make a difference.

Luke was raised by kind people, but he didn’t know who he was and what his potential was and the same goes for a lot of us. We meander about in life not knowing truly who we are and what we are able to achieve.

But when we start believing in ourselves great things can happen. As with Luke when he lifted the X-Wing out of the swamp.

Know your strengths and weaknesses

Luke Skywalker is emotional but “the force is strong.”

The Emperor was clever but didn’t understand the power of paternal love.

Princess Leia is clever but sometimes reckless.

When we start a business, it is wise to evaluate where your strengths lie. Sometimes it might take a while to truly understand yourself but when we do it will help us in our start-ups or new business by teaching us how to avoid mistakes. The Galactic Empire saw only their own strengths and not their weaknesses and, in the end, they were defeated.

Don’t join the dark side

darth-vader-1207142_960_720

Celebrate uniqueness

Customers, clients and employees bring their own skill to the business. To grow a business, we need to accept and celebrate this.

Don’t build a Death Star!!

It’s vital to be flexible and adaptable to changing circumstances. You should always consider alternatives to your course of action and develop multiple plans for achieving particular goals in case your plans don’t pan out. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. If an approach doesn’t seem to work, change direction.

Accept failure and learn from your mistakes

What did everybody learn from Darth Vader’s punishment of Admiral Ozzel? No one will ever give any suggestions and will be afraid of telling the leader anything for fear of making a mistake. And also, that if your superior fails, you will be promoted.

Have clear vision for your goal

If you know what your goal is, you will be able to inspire others to join you. The goals of the Rebel Alliance were simple, powerful and straightforward: Bring down the Galactic Empire, restore the Republic, and give people back their individual freedoms. How clear are yours?

Just do it!

Yoda says it better than anyone. “Do. Or do not. There is no Try.”

We often say; I will try. But as Yoda says maybe there is no try. Maybe we should just do it or not do it. Instead of using energy for countless tries we should just go ahead and do it, regardless of whether we are sure we are capable. Sometimes, I get the feeling we use the expression “I will try” as an excuse to not do our best. When we just go ahead and do it, we will have the opportunity to either succeed or fail. If we succeed, we will be joyous and if we fail, we will learn from our mistakes.

Yoda

Use the Force

Believe all humans carry a Force inside. This Force is what keeps us going when things are tough. To start a new business is not easy and you will have more than one moment when you wonder if this ever will work. You will have moments when you consider quitting what you have started.

When you feel like this, you should reach inside yourself and use your Force to keep going.

How to Create Engaging Content Over the Christmas Period

How to Create Engaging Content Over the Christmas Period.

Are you thinking about how you can make your social media channels standout over this festive period? Here are our top content ideas for you to explore.

 Festive cover and profile photo

Change your cover and profile photo to a festive one to get yourself, your team and your followers in the Christmas spirit.

Your cover photo is like your hoarding. Do you have any information, products and/or offers you could showcase specifically over the Christmas period? Even if that’s not the case just having a festive cover photo with office decorations will do the trick. Similarly, you could add a Santa hat, mistletoe or a snowflake to your profile picture. Make sure you have consistent festive cover & profile photos across your social media channels.

Create a festive offer

Christmas is one of the biggest spending seasons of the year. It makes a lot of sense to curate special offers for the Holiday season. You could influence a sale by creating ‘limited time only’ offers that will instill a sense of urgency in potential customers. Offering FREE shipping (if possible) will definitely push customers to buy from you online.

Create content with a festive twist!

If you are able to get an emotional response from your audience or simply get them excited about the holidays, that’s creating your ultimate engagement on social media.

Get your audience talking. You can create polls on your Facebook page. You could ask people about their favourite Christmas moment, or get them to compare two products in a poll.

If you can somehow talk about food on your channels, then definitely use that to your advantage. Share recipes, cooking tips etc. or get your followers involved- ask them to share their experiences, tips & advice. E.g. you could simply ask – Choose between this or that? Pigs in Blankets or Devils on Horseback?

You could also share tips and advice on decorating your home, gifting & gift-wrapping ideas. Sharing useful information on social media always wins.

Tip- Keep it simple. Research indicates that people generally remember content grouped in three so try and choose three main points and communicate them point wise.

Festive giveaway

Everyone loves a giveaway, especially this time of year! Hosting a festive giveaway can generate loads and loads of engagement on your pages. Just make sure the prize is lucrative enough. You could do an advent giveaway- a prize a day for 12 days of Christmas. Be sure to use consistent images everyday and talk at length about the prize to keep the audience hooked and have them come back for more.

Think of your end goal too, what are you trying to achieve with this giveaway- it could simply be a means to get more people into your FB messenger list or raise brand awareness or grow your email list. This will help you design the giveaway. You could set up a competition with asking holiday related topics or inviting your audience to share holiday specific photos.

Host a festive event

Even though we are living in the digital age, there’s nothing quite like a real event where you get to meet real people! You could co-host an event with a local influencer or a local popular online community. Create engaging invites for this event and you also get to create loads of fun content at the event, which you can share live or later.

The joy of living is giving

The holiday season is a great time to show that you care. You could host a festive event at the charity that you support. Get your local followers involved; ask them to donate blankets and jackets for the homeless. This will potentially generate a lot of engagement on your page and also bring together a lot of people as well.

We wish you a Merry Christmas!

Schedule your Merry Christmas and Happy New Year posts in advance! Think of creating something fun whilst still reflecting the true identity and values of your brand.

Tip- A video will generate more engagement compared to just an image.

Make the most of after Christmas Sales

A lot of people are on the hunt for offers, deals and discounts right after Christmas. Jump in on this and have your offers ready in time for Boxing Day. You could even roll out the offers online on Christmas Eve and Christmas day. You know what people do after their big meal, get online and look at sales!

If you have some content ideas for the festive period, please share them with us in the comments down below! Have a great December 🙂

Food Photography Tips

Food Photography Tips

Winning food content on social media is made of clear, high-resolution, sharp, white and bright images. Do YOU want to take amazing photos of your food? Here are some tips to get you started!

Natural light is your best friend. As far as possible take your photos under natural light. Try and not use overhead lights or your built in flash.

Move around to chase the best light. Don’t feel confined to taking photos in your kitchen, you will realise that perhaps stepping outside or putting your plate next to a window at a certain time of the day works best in terms of light. Be open to experimenting and working with different areas of your restaurant to shoot.

Work those angles. Pizza or flat food looks good from above (flat-lay), burgers or foods with height look good from the side and drinks usually at a 45-degree angle. Don’t be afraid to move the plate or your camera around to create the best angle for your photograph. Experimenting in this way will help you discover new and your favourite angles.

When it comes to food, simple is the best. A busy background could is distracting. So focus on the plate of food but don’t zoom in too close also. Don’t add too many props to the photo.

White Balance Magic– If whilst editing your food photo looks blue or yellow or not the right shade then use your editing software’s white balance tools! Also shooting in RAW format makes it easier for you to edit and adjust white balance. Also, adjusting the contrast and sharpness can really make a photo pop.

Cameras for food photography. You don’t need to invest in a camera right away, phone cameras and editing softwares are quite good these days. As long as you know the angles and work with the light not against it! Remember, when it comes to photography, natural light is your best friend. However, if you are ready to invest Canon, Nikon and Olympus & Panasonic do some amazing cameras. But before buying any camera do a thorough research of reviews online.

Best Editing Apps for Food Photography-Afterlight, Facetune, VSCO cam, Snapseed, Lightroom & Foodie are some of the best photo editing apps for Android & iPhones.

If you have any specific questions about food photography, leave us a comment down below and we will get back to you. You can also join our Facebook group where you will find the latest news, updates, tips, tricks & hacks dedicated to social media marketing for the hospitality industry.

Instagram Hacks for Restaurants, Hotels & the Hospitality Industry

Screen Shot 2018-08-07 at 7.40.16 PM

Statistics Source- Omnicore

If the above mentioned mind-boggling Instagram stats haven’t convinced you then consider this. Most 18-35 year olds look for places to eat, drink & party on Instagram. They base their decisions on photos & experiences posted by their friends and top influencers that they follow. You simply cannot NOT afford to be on Instagram if you are in the hotel, hospitality & restaurant industry. Being on Instagram and posting photos consistently is one thing BUT using it effectively to increase your following, engagement and generating sales requires a well-planned strategy. And here are our top tips to do exactly that.

Instagram Hacks for Restaurants, Hotels & the Hospitality Industry:

Optimise that Bio. Have your logo as the display picture and write a punchy bio. Unless you have 10k plus followers, your bio is the only place where you are allowed a clickable link to another destination. Use this strategically to get maximum bookings.

Switching to a business profile enables clickable buttons to your email, phone and directions to your restaurant. You get access to insights. By studying the insights you can see your audience, their location, gender etc. You get to see which posts work and which ones don’t. You can also see when your audience is most active. And that’s how you can determine when to post. It is recommended to post between 8am-9am and/or 2pm-5pm. But then see what works for your brand and audience and decide accordingly.

Instagram Stories is a great way to be seen on the explore page and features such as @mention, location, hash tags, GIFS etc. can help you get discovered. Boomerangs, videos & GIFS with a location tag will help you get more views than just a regular picture story. You can also add Stories to Highlights and these are featured right under your bio. That is a prominent place and new followers who discover you might like to see your highlights so be sure to include the right brand messages into your highlights! If you have 10k or more followers, you can add clickable links to your stories, so make sure to use that feature if it’s available to you.

The Future is Video. Use IGTV, Instagram Live & videos to your advantage. Instagram is pushing video content up on the algorithm so it makes sense to create more video content. Recipe videos could go viral and that is something you should definitely consider. If there is a gimmicky dessert, dish or cocktail you serve, showcase that through video content to attract new customers. Videos with lots of views and engagement often make it to the top of explore page hence putting you & your property in a very prominent place. Schedule Instagram Live for special events and occasions; if you have the budgets get influencers to do Live videos for your property. This could drive their traffic on to your Instagram. IGTV is Instagram’s recently launched video sharing app and allows you to upload videos that are 10 minutes long. Again indicating that video content is going to rule!

Make your property Instagrammable – Yes you do amazing food & drinks! But is your lighting and décor camera friendly? It’s worth the investment if you add some elements that picture well. Outdoor seating is a winner, fresh flowers, indoor plants, white surfaces, light & bright interiors, having full length mirrors and great lighting will always make people take photos. Having a beautiful & well-lit toilet can be a huge Instagram spot for the ladies. Have a nook especially for Instagram and taking photos, this could become a talking point on social media. Farm Girl Cafe has a dog’s face & rose petals on their lattes and this has become a big Instagram trend! Sketch London, Peggy Porschen Cakes & Farm Girl Cafe are extremely popular with top UK influencers due to their extremely instagrammable setup.

Screen Shot 2018-08-08 at 8.42.11 PM

Have influencers support you. Find influencers who love what you serve/produce and invite them for an over the top experience. Their Instagram post/ story/ video would be viewed by thousands but could also potentially get to the top of explore page under certain hashtags or the location tag and can really help drive people to your property as well as your Instagram page. This isn’t difficult; most influencers can be reached via DMs or email addresses mentioned in their bio. If you are looking at someone with a decent following 30-50k followers and their brand aligns nicely with your brand they should be okay with a complimentary meal, stay or experience and not charge a fee. There is no dearth of influencers, even if one says no, there is always the next one. Another thing you could do is to invite bloggers & influencers for all your special events and launches.

Invest in Resources– Don’t just rely on your iphone. Invest in a good camera and lighting because the competition on social media is insane and with food, drinks, hotels, locations & resorts you want to see clear, sharp & high quality content. When it comes to editing keep it real, don’t use excessive filters. If the photos are taken with a good camera and decent lighting you won’t need too much editing anyway. A consistent theme, look, feel for all the photos is always a good idea.

Engagement is Key– Instagram pushes up content with higher engagement. Engagement doesn’t only mean likes it also means comments on your content and ‘reposts’ of your content and tagging of your account etc. A great way to increase engagement with comments is to ask questions in your posts or host frequent giveaways. Contests and giveaways can also help boost your following, just make sure the prize is meaty enough 😉

Collaborate to Win– Collaborate with influencers and/or other industry players as long as they are not direct competition. You could also collaborate with another local business and cross promote that way. Collaboration could be on a photo, story, video or Live content. This will get your account mentions as well as traffic from other accounts.

Engage with Influencers. Engage with influencers & key players in your niche. Leave meaningful comments on their content and you can attract their audience onto your page as well. For instance you could regularly leave comments on top food & beverage bloggers and other local businesses.

Procatively encourage guests to Instagram. Having your Instagram handle and hashtag or hashtags displayed at a prominent spot can really help. If your customers take photos of their food and tag you, you can also unlock tons of free content that you can just repost on your account every now & again.

Make use of your hashtag allowance. You are allowed maximum of 30 hashtags per post; make sure you make the most of this. Also spend time researching hashtags for your specific area, cuisine etc. Get into the minds of your customers; think what they will be searching for on Instagram. Base your hashtag selection on that. See what popular hashtags in your niche already exist, it’s always good to choose not overly populated generic and saturated hashtags.

10 Steps to “SEE FIRST” on Facebook

10 Steps to “SEE FIRST” on Facebook – January 2018

With the major changes announced by Facebook last week, business page owners and marketers will need to rethink their approach on maximising the opportunities that Facebook has to offer – Please note has and not “had” as some people seem to be announcing!

The changes in algorithms is not the end of Facebook for businesses. We simply need to regroup, re think and come up with alternative and creative ways of reaching the 2.1 Billion users of the platform.

One step you can take immediately is to recommend your followers to add your business page to their “See First” list under their preferences. This is a functionality that many people do not use or even aware off. It is a way of saying to Facebook, I really like this page and want to make sure I see their posts as they are important to me, so please show them on my timeline.

So what action do you need to take?
We suggest you contact your loyal followers and ask them to take a minute to action this in order not to miss out on your social media activity. You can do this by putting out a post and giving them a guide on how to do this (even send them here if you wish) or maybe even email or message them on messenger, whichever is the easiest for you.

To help, we have written a simple step by step guide to show users how to set their preferences and hopefully to get your page on their “See First” list.

6 Must Do's on Social Media
